Bookstore to benefit public library loses money

Hello-world of library and bookstore lovers. If you love these you will know why I feel cheated! When I buy books at the Hilltop Books bookstore, my purchase money doesn’t reach the Chestnut Hill Library:expenses eat it all up!

Bookstore losses in recent years: $43,000, $42000, $55000

I was taking a look at Friends of the Chestnut Hill Library IRS 990 filings. Before I looked, I didn’t realize how bad it was. It’s so bad the that the store has been running a $140,000 deficit…I doubted the store’s potential profitability back in 2020 in a letter to the editor of our neighborhood paper, The Chestnut Hill Local.

DEVELOPMENTS

***NEWS just in 2/26/2025: The Friends of the Chestnut Hill Library inform that an anonymous donor is covering the $60,000 rent. The Chestnut Hill Library would benefit much more if the store were closed and nearly all of the donor’s money could actually go to the Chestnut Hill Library, no?
